Xinyi Junior High School Ecological Pond, Taipei City

2026/01/09

Fish glide gracefully through the clear pond, creating a pleasing scene that invites closer appreciation.
Taipei Municipal Xinyi Junior High School has established an ecological pond on campus to restore native aquatic plants and fish, serving both as a learning space for students and as a contribution to the conservation of Taiwan’s natural ecosystems.

With the support of various organizations—including native plants provided by the Taipei City School Environmental Education Center and native fish supplied by the Taiwan Native Fish Conservation Association—we have planted a variety of indigenous aquatic plants such as Taiwan floating heart (Nymphoides hydrophylla), wild water caltrop, and others. At the same time, native species including medaka, spotted fighting fish, high-bodied bitterling, and freshwater mussels have been introduced.

To ensure good water quality and maintain a healthy ecosystem, ultraviolet sterilization lamps have also been installed in the ecological pond.

Why Is It Called the “VVIP Ecological Pond”?

Our sincere thanks go to Vice President Tsai of Jing Sheng Materials Co., Ltd. for generously providing an ultraviolet sterilization lamp for the pond. This remarkable device uses eco-friendly, energy-efficient UV LED technology and features a quartz optical system that holds patents in both Taiwan and the United States. It is a high-performance UV sterilization lamp capable of achieving drinking-water quality standards.

The installation has significantly improved the problem of green water in the pond by effectively inhibiting green algae growth and preventing eutrophication. As a result, the water is now crystal clear, allowing the fish to finally make their beautiful appearance—eliciting excited exclamations from students such as, “Wow! There are so many fish!” and “Wow! This fish is so beautiful!”

In addition to algae control, the UV sterilization system effectively eliminates harmful bacteria in the water, creating a healthy environment where fish can thrive. It has also greatly reduced unpleasant odors from the pond. This has transformed the ecological pond into a clean, beautiful, and healthy habitat—one that teachers and students enjoy and can easily approach for observation and learning.
